Measurement & Installation Preparation

Accurate measurements are the first step toward a confident order. This guidance helps you prepare; it is not a DIY installation promise.

Inside mount

  • Use a steel tape measure and record each measurement to the nearest 1/8 inch.
  • Measure width at the top, middle, and bottom, then height at the left, center, and right.
  • Use the smallest width and smallest height. Do not make manual deductions.

Outside mount

  • Measure the window opening to the nearest 1/8 inch with a steel tape measure.
  • Add 4 inches total to the opening width and 4 inches total to the opening height.
  • This creates roughly 2 inches of overlap on each side.

Not sure your opening is straightforward? Shallow, obstructed, uneven, unusually shaped, or specialty openings deserve a review before ordering. Send us photos and your measurements so we can help assess the application.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between light-filtering and room-darkening fabric?
Light-filtering fabric diffuses daylight for a brighter, softer room. Room-darkening fabric provides stronger light reduction and privacy, while still allowing some light around the shade and its edges.
Does room-darkening guarantee complete darkness?
No. Standard roller shades have side gaps because the fabric is narrower than the roller tube. Room-darkening fabric reduces incoming light; it does not promise complete darkness.
How do I choose a top finish?
Choose Open Roll for a minimal, exposed-roller look; Fabric Valance for a softer fabric-covered top treatment; or Cassette for a more structured finished profile. The builder shows the compatible choices for your selected shade.
What operation choices are available?
Choose cordless, continuous cord loop, or motorized operation. Smart-home control is available for compatible motorized selections; the builder shows only options compatible with your fabric, finish, size, and application.
How should I measure my window?
Use a steel tape measure and record measurements to the nearest 1/8 inch. For an inside mount, take three width and three height measurements and use the smallest of each without making manual deductions. For an outside mount, add 4 inches total to both the opening width and height for roughly 2 inches of overlap on each side.
Is there a measuring guide I can use?
Yes. The Measurement & installation preparation section includes an Open measuring guide (PDF) link, plus separate inside- and outside-mount measuring guidance.
Should I choose an inside or outside mount?
Inside mount fits within the window frame for a built-in look. Outside mount sits over the opening and can provide more coverage. The right choice depends on the frame, available space, and the look you want.
Where are these roller shades built?
This collection is built in North America and made to your selected measurements, fabric, finish, and operation choices.
What makes these roller shades a premium choice?
They pair premium materials, quality-focused finishes, and made-to-measure details. The live builder lets you tailor the fabric, light control, finish, and operation to your room.
Can I combine every option in the builder?
No. Fabric, lift, top finish, size, and application can limit which combinations are available. The live builder and quote validation determine the eligible configuration.
Is it normal for the fabric to look different at first?
Yes. Woven fabric can show normal variation in texture, sheen, and color under different indoor light. Temporary creases from shipping or rolling usually relax after the shade is fully unrolled and left hanging for several days.
